Fourteen years ago, the Victorian Parliament formally apologised for past forced adoption practices, acknowledging the experiences of mothers, children and families who were profoundly affected by them.

The apology, delivered on 25 October 2012, was an important step towards recognising the harm caused by practices that saw many women separated from their babies, often without genuine choice or informed consent. Although the apology marked a significant moment of acknowledgement, its importance extends beyond the day it was delivered.

For many people affected by forced adoption, the consequences continue to shape their lives, relationships and sense of identity. Accessing personal records, understanding their own history or reconnecting with family can bring complex emotions and challenges. Having access to sensitive, compassionate support can help people navigate these experiences in ways that work for them.

Relationships Australia Victoria provides support through our Forced Adoption Support Service, funded by the Australian Government Department of Social Services. The service is available to anyone affected by past forced adoption practices and offers free, confidential counselling, assistance with accessing records, support with family reunions and community education.

The work of supporting people affected by forced adoption also highlights the importance of listening to individual experiences and recognising that there is no single way to navigate the past.

Our Open Place service supports Forgotten Australians affected by forced adoption practices, including counselling and assistance with records searches.

As we mark this anniversary, we recognise everyone whose life has been affected by past adoption practices. Whether you are seeking answers, considering reconnecting with family or looking for someone to talk to about your experiences, or know someone who is looking for this support, it is available.

We’re also proud to endorse the 14th Anniversary of the Victorian Apology for Past Adoptions event hosted by the Association Representing Mothers Separated by Adoption (Victoria) and VANISH.
