Men’s Behaviour Change Programs

Article

25/02/2021

What is a men's behaviour change program?

A men’s behaviour change program (MBCP) is a program for men wanting to end their use of controlling and abusive behaviours in their relationships. The program is designed to:

  • Encourage men to take responsibility for their use of family violence
  • Provide an opportunity for men to explore attitudes and beliefs that may influence their use of violence
  • Increase men’s understanding of the impact of their use of family violence on their partners and/or children
  • Assist men in making changes towards developing safe and respectful relationship with their partners and children.

The MBCP is a 20-week group program for men.  In addition, support is offered to affected family members by our family safety practitioners.

How have we adapted during COVID-19?

Our MBCPs are considered essential services by the Victorian Government as they are part of the integrated family violence system.  We believe it is important to run the groups when possible, although there may be times when we are required to suspend them when the Victorian Government requires us to do so during periods of lockdown. In 2020, we undertook two priority pieces of work to ensure that we provide support to men engaged in our MBCPs  and keep women and children safe. We have now developed an online (Zoom) option as well as a modified face-to-face program. This means that we can continue to deliver this service in a safe way.
