Post-separation video resources

We're pleased to share 4 short animations from Relationships Australia that highlight real experiences of separation.

These stories are inspired by interviews with people who have navigated separation firsthand. While names and identifying details have been changed to protect privacy, the experiences and emotions reflected in each story are genuine.

The animations have been created to support both people going through separation and the professionals who support them. We encourage you to watch each video through to the end, as each story concludes with an important message for reflection.

Your choices after separation

Two separated parents and their two sons share their journey of separation. This story shows how children are affected by the choices parents make, and how the parents responded when one of their children was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

My mob have my back

This lived experience story outlines challenges that a First Nations child experienced in her early years. As she grew into young adulthood, her extended family started to work together, with each family member taking on a different role in her life.

Being flexible and adaptive for our child

Two parents from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds tell how they worked through challenges after separating, from pregnancy, through to the birth and early childhood of their son. They realised that what is most important is putting their son first.

Our new normal

Dale shares what it was like when his parents separated, and his dad then told the family that she was transgender and identified as female. Dale’s story shows the ongoing strength of their relationship, and how seeking help when he needed it made a difference.
