What is parenting coordination

Parenting coordination is a child-focused management and dispute resolution process, that is facilitated by a mental health or legal practitioner with training and experience in FDR or mediation. The practitioner assists parents and families in compromised and/or high-conflict situations to create and maintain healthy relationships with their children, where it is safe and reasonable to do so.

The practice of parenting coordination helps practitioners to:

  • manage parenting plans and support parents with compliance with court orders
  • help parents manage minor disputes related to their children
  • enhance their conflict management and communication skills, and make effective decisions in order to effectively assist clients
  • take a child-centred approach with a focus on the best interests of children’s
  • support family relationships, where appropriate.

Learning outcomes

During our 4-day intensive course, you'll:

  • enhance your conflict-management and communication skills
  • learn how to take a child-focused approach to assist separating families
  • participate in role-plays to build confidence in your work supported by supervisors and advice by qualified trainers
  • be introduced to academic research and recent articles relevant to the field

Following successful completion of the course, you’ll gain the certification and endorsement required to practice as a parenting coordinator, subject to the eligibility outlined above.
